Sarah Symes (1984, Dublin) has just completed a BA in Fine Art at the
Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). She is the 2006
recipient of the Lorna Brett Jordan Bursary for
printmaking. Sarah has also been awarded the
Mullan Gallery Prize for best bronze sculpture at the 125th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Ulster Academy
of Arts.
In her most recent work, Sarah has
been using materials from the environment as a tool. She is interested
in fungi and their spore patterns in relation to the
idea of 'the city mushrooming out of control'. The
artist has used the spore patterns as a form of drawing in
her prints. Highlighting the individuality of people in the
city these prints are all unique images; although some may
appear similar, they all have a slight variation in colour,
pattern or formation.

The effects of light and reflections are also of interest to
Sarah, as evident with her photograms shown here.
Photograms are created by shining light onto objects placed
directly on photosensitive paper. Each of these
photograms is entirely unique capturing the image of the
light at the moment it hits the paper. Similarly to the
spore patterns the images created by Sarah are like
fingerprints consisting of fine lines and unique formations.
