Michael Gemmell (1950, Coleraine,
Co. Derry). The Wicklow-based artist who studied in the
Limerick College of Art is best known as a painter of the
Burren, the Islands and the Irish Bogs. He works in oils,
and his quest to capture colour and light led him to interpret
bogland and mountain landscapes in varying atmospheric conditions.
With high keyed colours, his work is unmistakable: Flashing
yellows, deep saturated blues and vivid orange flow sensually
together in his paintings. Michael's first show was in 1972
and he has continued to show his work in galleries throughout
Ireland.
