Mark Doherty

Mark Doherty (1987, Ireland) completed a BA in Fine Art at the Dublin Institute of Technology (D.I.T), Dublin in 2009.  His work  stems primarily from his interest in both Far Eastern Art, particularly from Japan, and his influence from popular culture sources. Mark dislikes the created distinction between 'high' and 'low' in art and as such sees no difficulty in drawing from such fields as film, anime, manga, comics, books by Terry Pratchet and Odilon Redon, etc. alongside historical and contemporary art.  He seeks to create alternate worlds in which to satirize our own, allowing us to look at our foibles exaggerated and thus challenge them by laughing at ourselves. Through this framework, he builds narratives which address such diverse issues as body image, our view of the 'other' in society, urban social isolation, man's conflicted relationship with nature, and  society's newfound adoration of science, celebrity and material wealth, among other things. By placing them in an alternative setting to this world, Mark chooses to distance the questioning of these issues from his  own personal opinions, leaving it open to us - the viewers -  to draw our own conclusions.
